Year 1

Welcome to our Year 1 page! Here you will find more information about what and how we learn in Year 1.
We have 2 classes this year in Year 1. Mrs Christie (Room 1) and Mrs Northey (Room 3). You will find our classes in the GAM building in the playground.

How we Learn in Year 1 ?
The Year 1 curriculum is delivered through carefully planned play based activities through which children will develop their skills in:
- Communication
- Phonological Awareness
- Early Reading
- Early Mathematics
- ICT
Playful teaching and learning happens throughout Year 1 and builds on the experiences that the children have had at home and in pre-school settings. We know that play is crucial to children’s brain development. It contributes to positive mental health and wellbeing, develops skills such as resilience, problem solving, sharing and negotiating, and most of all - it is fun!

Year 1 Toolkit
Our Year 1 curriculum develops all the skills that children need to become successful learners. In the early days of Year 1 we lay the foundation for reading, writing and mathematical development through carefully planned learning opportunities which encompass phonological awareness (the skills children require before learning phonics), visual discrimination and motor skills.
