Spelling and Grammar
In Year 5 we continue to build upon the foundations laid in Y1-4, focusing on the Read, Write, Inc. Spelling scheme by Oxford Owl. Within this scheme we examine plural rules, homophones and homonyms.
We cover the following areas in Grammar.
- Parts of Speech (Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives etc.)
- Punctuation (including commas, apostrophes and Inverted commas)
- Similes and Metaphors
- Synonyms and Antonyms
- Alphabetical Order - use of the dictionary and thesaurus
Spelling Overview
Reading
In Year 5 we use a range of reciprocal reading strategies including prediction, questioning, clarifying and summarizing.
Throughout the year we enjoy a number of class novels. These include:
- Here we are by Oliver Jeffers
- The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
- Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
