Ditch the Dark

Today we took part in the annual Ditch the Dark day and talked about the importance of being seen in the dark mornings and evenings. The Walk, Wheel Cycle Trust, formally known as Sustran, promote this campaign every year.

About the campaign

  • Goal: To get more children to walk, scoot, or cycle to school, which reduces congestion and pollution, and improves their physical and mental health.
  • Focus: To raise awareness about road safety during darker months when visibility is lower.
  • How it works: Students and families are encouraged to wear bright colors and reflective gear, while schools organize events to celebrate this active travel.

How to participate

  • Be visible: Wear bright and/or reflective clothing, such as high-vis vests or accessories.
  • Use lights: If cycling after dark or in low light, make sure to have a white headlight on the front and a red light on the back of your bike.
  • Be prepared: Plan your route, choose safe paths, and consider wearing reflective ankle straps, shoe covers, or using flashing lights on your wheels or tires.
